Our Story

A better way to build

Pat, our founder, is a born and bred Gippsland local, growing up in the quaint little town of Maffra.

After high school, he moved to the big smoke to study architecture. He enjoyed the city life, working in construction as an architect and project manager. He has developed a passion for environmentally sustainable design (ESD) throughout his career, working with businesses to find ways of implementing ecological principles wherever he could.

However, after a while, the hustle and bustle started to grind on him and his wife (who is also from Gippsland). With a young one on the way, they decided to move back to Gippsland so that their children could enjoy the country lifestyle that they grew up loving.

As part of the move, they briefly looked into building a home. However, Pat was dismayed to find the most feasible options in the area were volume builders, who had a focus on profit and little regard for sustainability. In the end, they decided to buy an existing home and renovate.

Pat was fortunate enough to have construction industry knowledge behind him to do this. However, he knew that many people who were looking to buy, build or renovate didn’t. This makes it a daunting task, especially if you’re doing it for the first time. He also saw that many homeowners want to live more environmentally consciously, but don’t know where to start. Their lack of experience makes it hard for them to have a voice throughout the design and build process. Therefore, they are at the hands of the industry professionals, many of whom have their own agenda. And in the fast-paced society that we live in today, who has the time to research and implement the right building practices for their situation, let alone sustainable design?

With all this in mind, Pat wanted to use his experience to make meaningful change. Thus, HAUS was born, offering a better way to build. Whether it be additions to an existing home or building a new home, he wants to make sustainable homes more accessible to all.
